American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month! Sadly, heart disease is the number one killer in the US. In February, The Ommani Center and other organizations want to reinforce the importance of heart health.

In most cases, heart disease is preventable.  But we must adopt a healthy lifestyle and choose foods that support and heal our bodies so that we can maintain a healthy weight, control blood sugar and cholesterol, treat high blood pressure, and get in lots of movement.

A plant-based lifestyle is the best lifestyle to reverse heart disease or avoid it in the first place.   Delicious mouthwatering meals centered on fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains with a few nuts and seeds are so nourishing, satisfying, and colorful too.

Here are a few tips you can try in February to boost your intake of heart-healthy plants and celebrate these food days:

  • Try the chocolate date sauce (Chocolate Fondue Day: 5th and Valentine’s: 14th).
  • Enjoy a veggie pizza without cheese. Instead sprinkle on some nutritional yeast (Pizza Day: 9th).
  • Use mashed bananas, applesauce or ground flaxseed with water to replace eggs and oil in pancakes (Pancake Day: 16th) or muffins (Muffin Day: 20th).
  • Make a big pot of vegetable and bean soup or chili each week and enjoy it throughout the week (Chili Day: 25th).
