Take Care of Your Roots, Then the Sky’s the Limit

We had the opportunity to see the world’s largest spruce tree in Olympic National Park this past summer.  This ancient tree is estimated to be 1,000 years old.  It is 58’11” in circumference and is 191’ tall.  The massive tree is amazing, and the part of the tree that spoke most to me was the immense root system that provides support and nourishment. The energy of the tree was incredible, and just touching the roots both calmed and energized my spirit.  When I touched the roots, some sap got onto my hands and I enjoyed the additional gift of breathing in the beautiful spruce essence as we continued our hike.

Nature is a wonderful teacher.  In addition to the incredible connection and energy experienced in nature, there are so many lessons to absorb if we allow ourselves to be present for them. 

In our energy system, known as the chakras, we also have “roots”.  The root chakra, the energy center at the base of the spine, is responsible for dealing with safety and security, trust, providing a sense of belonging, of having enough (abundance), grounding, boundaries, providing connection to physical reality.

Each chakra is important and supports the rest.  The root chakra provides our base of support, the sense that we are safe in the world, our needs are met, we belong, and we have enough.  Without this support, we aren’t able to reach higher.  Survival is our first need. Taking time to restore balance in the root chakra provides a foundation that opens us up and allows us to have dreams, and gives us support to take the necessary steps to achieve them.

Try one or several of the following to strengthen your support system: diaphragmatic breathing, silver cord breath, walk or stand outside, feeling the sense of your feet connecting with the earth, look out your window and tune in to the natural beauty around you, drink warm herbal tea, eat nourishing soups, massage your feet with oil or lotion. The practice of yoga is balancing and grounding for the entire system, as is a Reiki healing session. 

If your goals feel out of reach, think of one step you could take in the direction of your dreams and goals.  Take that one step today.  Each day take another step.  Think of this as spreading your roots.  Your roots will grow down deep within the earth.  They will spread out in all directions.  This process doesn’t happen quickly.  But becoming grounded in daily practices and action steps moves us steadily forward and allows us to enjoy each step of this sacred life journey.
