The Language of Symptoms

Each and every approach to health care carries assumptions related to health and disease. In conventional medicine, for example, uncomfortable symptoms are generally regarded as “bad,” and the disappearance of those symptoms is generally regarded as “good.”

In the 1970’s and 80’s, however, the well-known stress researcher Hans Selye, MD, PhD demonstrated how uncomfortable symptoms are often our attempts to restore balance. A simple example is fever–while it may feel uncomfortable, it plays a vital role in helping the immune system rid the body of infection. Yet so often we’re taught that fever is a “bad” thing, and we need to lower it “for goodness’ sake!”

In homeopathy, these uncomfortable symptoms speak the language of a broader imbalance. That is, as we describe our physical discomfort, our mental and emotional symptoms are also expressed. Mind, body, and emotions are intimately connected (and never were disconnected) making each of us “experts” in our experience–and expression–of our health problems.

So our very unique experience and description of disease also provides the key to solving our imbalance. Nature is incredibly specific about the different dilemmas we find ourselves in–physically, mentally, and emotionally–and its homeopathic remedies are matched with our symptoms. When old survival patterns outlive their usefulness, they begin to interfere with our growth and unfoldment. And that imbalance between “survival”–vs. growth and unfoldment–creates the experience of “dis-ease.”

In homeopathy, then, disease is not “opposite” to health, but a reflection of our “exaggerated” instincts to survive. Rather than battling the symptoms arising from that process, homeopathic remedies inform us about the fuller price we’re paying. Matching remedies provoke the deep healing potentials that lie within all of us, leading to greater balance on all levels.

Do you have chronic physical, mental, or emotional symptoms that persist in spite of conventional treatment? If so, you can call to see if your current problems are a good match for homeopathy care.
